HERPING OVERVIEW

May is a perfect month to visit the Amazon for herping. We will visit Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Then we will visit another reserve in the Amazon rainforest on our way back to Quito. Although we plan to focus on snakes, we will also encounter a large variety of lizards and frogs.

Bothrops bilineatus

Lago Agrio

Getting to Lago Agrio either means a long drive from the Quito airport or a morning flight to Coca followed by a short drive to Lago Agrio. There are herping sites nearby to target Bothrops bilineatus.

Corallus hortulanus

Cuyabeno

The main form of transportation in Cuyabeno is motorized canoe. We will spend one week herping at a comfortable lodge using a motorized canoe and hiking on their expansive trail networks.

Foothills

Another biodiversity hotspot is where the Amazon meets the Andes. Herping will be exclusively by hiking because there are no boats in the foothills. We are also closer to Quito for the departure day.
