HERPING OVERVIEW

March is the best month to see and photograph the snakes of Ecuador. We will explore the cloud forests of Mindo, the heart of the Ecuadorian Chocó, and the Amazon rainforest. Although we plan to focus on snakes, we will encounter a large variety of lizards and frogs.

A short drive from the Quito airport and we will reach Mindo for the first night. Our main targets will be Bothrops osbornei and any endemic snake species from the western cloudforests of Ecuador.

A slightly longer travel day will take us to the heart of the Ecuadorian Chocó where will spend 4 nights at a very comfortable lodge exploring their expansive trail network to search for iconic lowland species.

Amazon Rainforest

On the Amazon side of the Andes, we will visit two different reserves to maximize the number of Amazonian snake species that are possible to encounter over the course of one week.
